Common Problems

Common garage door opener problems.

Sometimes the opener is the problem, and sometimes it's the door. We check both so you don't replace an opener you didn't need to.

Opener Runs but Door Doesn't Move

A disconnected trolley, stripped gear, or a broken door spring can cause this. Don't keep running it.

Door Reverses Before Closing

Misaligned or dirty safety sensors and incorrect force settings are the usual causes.

Remote or Keypad Not Working

Batteries, programming, or a failing receiver can stop remotes and keypads from working.

Opener Is Loud or Strains

A noisy, struggling opener may be working against an unbalanced door or wearing out.

Opener Won't Respond at All

Power, wall button, logic board, or motor problems can make the opener completely unresponsive.

Old Opener Without Modern Safety

Older openers may lack features like safety sensors and rolling-code security.

What to Expect

Repair it or replace it — your call.

We test the opener and the door together, since a door with a weak spring or binding track can wear out an opener. Then we explain what's wrong and the cost to fix it.

If a new opener makes more sense, we install several brands and help you choose one that fits your door and how you use your garage.

Power out or opener broken? Be careful with the emergency release.

Only pull the red emergency release cord when the door is fully closed. If the door is open or partly open and a spring is weak or broken, it can fall fast. If the door feels very heavy once it's released, stop — a spring is likely broken. Call us; emergency service is available 24/7.

Before You Call

What you can safely check.

  • Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power.
  • Replace the batteries in the remote or keypad.
  • Check that the safety sensors near the floor face each other, are clean, and their lights are steady.
  • Make sure the lock button on the wall control isn't turned on.
  • Don't run the opener repeatedly if the door is jammed, crooked, or very heavy.

Cost

What affects the cost of opener work.

You'll know the price before any work begins.

Repair or replace

A sensor adjustment or remote programming is a small job; a failed motor or logic board may make a new opener the better value.

Opener model

Openers differ in drive type, power, and features. We'll go over the options we carry.

Accessories

Extra remotes, keypads, and other accessories are priced separately.

Door condition

If the door itself is unbalanced, it should be fixed so it doesn't wear out the new opener.

A service-call charge applies to the visit and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with it. After-hours calls are priced differently. Call 765-863-3333 for current pricing.

Common Questions

Straightforward answers.

Have a question that isn't listed here? Call765-863-3333and we'll be glad to help.

What brands of openers do you install?

We install several brands of garage door openers and can recommend one based on your door and budget. Call us to talk through the options.

Do you repair openers you didn't install?

Yes. We troubleshoot and repair openers from common brands. Parts availability can vary by model and age.

Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?

Most often the safety sensors near the floor are misaligned, dirty, or blocked. It can also be the opener's force settings or something binding in the track.

How do I open my garage door during a power outage?

With the door fully closed, pull the red emergency release cord and lift the door by hand. If the door is open or very heavy, don't release it — a weak or broken spring can let it fall. Call us instead.

Should I repair or replace my opener?

Many opener problems are simple repairs. Replacement can make sense for an older opener that's failing or lacks modern safety features. We'll explain both options.

Is your opener work warrantied?

Yes. Our labor carries a 1-year warranty, and openers and parts carry the manufacturer's or supplier's warranty.
