A Loud Bang in the Garage
A torsion spring breaking under tension makes a sound like a gunshot or firecracker.
Garage Door Springs · Kokomo, IN
Heard a loud bang from the garage? It's probably a broken spring. We replace torsion and extension springs on residential garage doors, match them to your door, and balance the door so it runs smoothly and safely.
Common Problems
Springs do the heavy lifting for your door. When one breaks, the door becomes extremely heavy and the opener can't lift it safely.
A torsion spring breaking under tension makes a sound like a gunshot or firecracker.
Look at the spring above the door, without touching it. A break usually shows as a gap of a few inches in the coil.
The opener's safety limits stop it when the door is too heavy to lift.
A balanced door is fairly easy to lift. If it suddenly feels like it weighs hundreds of pounds, the springs aren't doing their job.
Worn or broken springs can let the door drop fast instead of closing smoothly.
When a spring breaks, the lift cables often go slack or come off their drums.
What to Expect
Springs are sized to your door's weight and height. The wrong spring leaves the door unbalanced, which strains the opener and can make the door unsafe. We match the spring to the door, then check the parts that work with it.
Springs hold a large amount of stored energy. Replacing them takes the right tools and training, so please don't try it yourself.

Don't adjust or replace springs yourself, and don't keep running the opener — the door can fall or damage the opener. Keep people and cars clear of the door and call us. Emergency service is available 24/7.
Spring Types
Most newer doors use torsion springs; some older or lighter doors use extension springs. We service both.
Mounted on a bar above the door. They twist to store energy and usually come as one or two springs. A broken torsion spring shows a visible gap in the coil.
Run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. They should have safety cables running through them in case a spring breaks.
The Visit
Cost
You'll know the price before any work begins. These are the main things that change it.
Torsion and extension springs are priced differently, and heavier or taller doors need larger springs.
Many doors have two springs. Replacing both at once costs more up front but can save a second service call.
Cables, drums, or bearings that were damaged when the spring broke may need to be replaced too.
Calls outside regular hours are priced differently. We'll tell you before we come out.
A service-call charge applies to the visit and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with it. After-hours calls are priced differently. Call 765-863-3333 for current pricing.
One or Both?
If your door has two springs, they've usually been through the same number of open-and-close cycles. When one breaks, the other is often close behind.
One visit, matched springs, and the door stays evenly balanced. Usually the better value if the springs are the same age.
Lower cost today. It can make sense if the other spring is newer. We'll tell you what we see so you can decide.
